What is Pilates?
Pilates
is a gentle, non-aerobic, no impact method of exercise which lengthens
and strengthens the muscles and improves posture. It is suitable for men and women of
any age and any level of fitness, from athletes to the over 80's, and
is generally considered one of the safest forms of exercise today because it places minimum stress on the joints and heart.
Many Doctors, physiotherapists, osteopaths and
chiropractors now recommend Pilates as one of the safest forms of
exercise available.
It takes its name from Joseph Pilates who devised this form of exercise
in the early part of the last century.
Who is Pilates for?
Initially
popular amongst only dancers, Pilates has now been discovered by a
wider public ranging from those who want to reduce back pain, help with
specific injuries and/or medical problems to those who simply want to
get fit, have flatter stomachs or just de-stress. Whatever the aim,
Pilates can help.
Is Pilates just exercise?
Pilates
is more dynamic than yoga but less aggressive and high-impact than step
or aerobics. Pilates exercises target not just our stronger muscles,
but also the weaker ones too. The result is a properly balanced body,
with better joint mobility, toned muscles and a good, natural posture.
Pilates helps you achieve this posture by strengthening the centre of
the body to support the lower back, helping you to stand straight and
hold your upper body correctly. With Pilates we can isolate and
strengthen specific muscles and tackle particular problems with
precision. Pilates exercises can help recovery following injury or
surgery, and by strengthening the body we aim to reduce the possibility
of the same injuries recurring in the future.

"I
have been attending Lauren's classes for 10 years, starting as a
complete novice and working up to more advanced exercises. She has
proven knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and makes Pilates thoroughly
enjoyable whilst at the same time ensuring there is plenty to
challenge and work towards. I have noticed significant improvements
in muscle tone, mobility, posture and flexibility. Lauren's expertise
is particularly apparent in modifying activities according to
individual's needs particularly when there are past or current
injuries and I regularly recommend Pilates to my patients with back
problems."
